Share video on Discord without a Nitro subscription

January 26, 2023

If you’ve set up a free Discord server for your friends or fellow gamers to chat and hang out, you’ve probably been stuck trying to upload and share video that’s bigger than the 8MB file size limit. To share bigger or longer videos, Discord promotes it’s Nitro Basic (increasing to 50MB) for $2.99/month or Nitro (up to 500MB uploads) for $9.99/month.

But unless you’re looking for other Discord features like Activities or Server Boosts, there’s no reason to upgrade to Nitro just to share the best game clips or videos. Use a free video host to upload and post videos quickly, just copy and paste the video link and voila, you can share HD video without another subscription.

Share using Youtube

Youtube is a good option to upload and share video to Discord, particularly if you have a channel that you’re building a following around. Features to follow your channel and comment on videos extend the upload outside of your discord chat. If you’re only looking for a quick way to share with a small group of people, there’s more to configure with each video.

Pros:

  • Good for building an audience/brand if you’re building a channel
  • Free for any size/length/quality of video
  • Allows people to follow and comment outside your Discord chat

Cons:

  • You have to create an account to share video
  • It’s not as quick to upload and share as other tools - Requires making titles, video details, settings for uploads
  • Advertisements in the video can be annoying

Share using Streamable

Cons:

  • Videos shared without creating an account expire after a day
  • Free account videos are only guaranteed to stay live for 90 days
  • Very long or large video files require upgrading to a paid subscription
  • Videos are easy to share but no channel for your content
